SA Final Leg of the 2010 World Miss University Beauty Contest
DIDIMALA kicked off the World Cup 2010 year by hosting the South African final leg of the World Miss University Beauty Contest. Laurie Botha, owner of Model Management , who runs Miss S.A Campus & Miss University Africa pageant managing beauty queens and kings nationally selected from universities, chose to initiate their journey in the African Bushveld.

This prestigious event was hosted at Didimala Game Lodge, where, upon arrival, participants were treated to delectable croissants and fresh fruit juice to still their appetites. Didimala’s luxury rooms welcomed the participants who had some time to freshen up before the adventurous quad bike safari presented by Fun Quads

The quad bike safari started with a few cautious participants, but nerves were quickly eased with the arrival of Arno Jordaan and Jakkie Louw. Excess rainfall the day before added to the excitement, ensuring nobody remained mud-free for long!

The awe-inspiring organic architecture of Didimala was the perfect backdrop to the bush craft & survival skills presentation, by David Brooke and Mike Perry of Bush Encounters who managed to heave the anxiety levels with a dangerous snake handling and venom extraction course. With survival confidence, the finalists relaxed at the pool, under the Silver Cluster Leaf Trees even enjoying the berries from the local “num-num” bush with the Grey Loeries.

The wine tasting was presented by New View Liquor and the Wine Fundi in the Zila Zila cocktail bar, overlooking another astounding bushveld sunset.

Even at beauty pageants, the evenings in the bushveld are not to be wasted. Dr Chris Engelbrecht of Astronomy Africa offered an astronomy introduction to the night sky, setting up and operating large GPS telescopes. Viewing of the constellations, planets and moon, combined with legendary fine dining, created the heavenly atmosphere for the finalists.

Nothing tops an eventful day like a “sing along” with Jakkie Louw and Arno Jordaan around a massive boma fire with wildlife sounds serenading the night.

This glittering event at Didimala, concluded with an early morning game drive, witnessing the African sunrise, a journey of giraffe feeding off the acacias and Rhino Bulls presenting with an odd interest at the beautiful finalists in the open vehicle , and the yellow billed hornbills cheerfully welcoming the new day.
